Weekly Baseball Tip- Should You Squish The Bug?
Many youth baseball coaches teach young hitters to squish the bug in order to get good hip rotation, however, rotating on the back toe doesn't assure proper hip rotation
The reality is that the rotation of the torso and hips trigger the turning of the back foot. The squishing of the bug is a non-issue. What's more important is that the belt buckle is facing the pitcher at contact.
Take a look at some great Major League hitters and notice that their foot actually slides a few inches from it's original starting position (green line). Also notice the full hip turn. The bottom right photo shows an amateur hitter that squishes the bug and demonstrates a weak position just before contact.
This sliding of the back foot with the positive movement of the hitter reinforces the fact that squishing the bug is not a vital lesson to teach young hitters, rather "taking a picture of the pitcher" with the belly button is a better analogy.
